Everyone has read different plays throughout the years of high school. But have you ever read the crucible? The crucible is an exciting, interesting and dramatic play written by Arthur Miller. It’s especially interesting when you have a tragic hero . A tragic hero is often the protagonist who commits an action or makes a mistake which eventually leads to his or her defeat. Each characters role is very important, especially John Proctors and Abigail Williams.
John proctor is a good man. His strong sexual desire for Abigail Williams, lead to the affair with Abigail Williams. Once the trials began Proctor knows that he can stop Abigail’s violently act but only if he confesses of his adultery. Proctor is a proud man who likes to keep his reputation clean. He tries to name Abigail as a fraud through Marry Warrens testimony without revealing the truth information. When he fails he calls Abigail a whore. “ How-do you call heaven! whore! whore!” (220). Proctors confession succeed only when he gest arrests and convicted as a witch. They offer him the opportunity to make a public confession of his guilt, he almost declares defeat, he even signs a written confession but rips the paper because he wants to save his name. By refusing to give up his personal integrity, Proctor proclaims that such value
will take him to heaven. As Elizabeth says in the end of the story, responding to Hale’s plea “he have his goodness now. God forbid i take it from him” (240).
Abigail Williams is one of the major characters she lies, manipulates her friends. “My name is good in the village! I will not have it said my name is soiled! goody proctor is a gossiping liar!” (172). All her lies eventually send nineteen innocent people to death. Abigail is an unmarried girl. Since she had an affair with John Proctor she takes advantage. A simple accusation from one of Abigail’s troops is enough to convict and arrest the most well known human in Salem, she then has the opportunity to accuse them of the worst sin ever created: devil work ship.
Plays like this one can be compared with others plays such as Julius Caesar who’s characters play a big role in the play and in the end the protagonist know as the tragic hero, dies due to it’s downfall.
